SnowTracker has no accounts and no servers of its own. Your sessions are stored on your device. The app has no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
What data it collects and how
Location: the position, speed and altitude provided by your iPhone’s GPS, with your location permission. It’s collected while you record a session. In Today, the app reads a position only if you’ve already given permission; it never asks for it there.
Motion: the air pressure measured by your iPhone’s barometer, with your motion permission, while you record a session.
Health, on Apple Watch: with your Health permission on the watch, during the session, the app reads your heart rate, active calories and the distance of each run, and receives the skiing segments that Health detects. The watch sends them to your iPhone.
What you create in the app: your sessions and your app settings.
The app doesn’t collect your name, your email, your contacts or any identifier to track you.
What it’s used for
Location: to measure speed, distance, altitude and vertical, to detect runs and lifts, and to draw and play back the route. In Today, to show the nearest ski resort.
Motion: to measure vertical more precisely.
Health: to show your heart rate during the session, to show your heart rate and calories in the day’s summary, and to save them with the session. The Health segments, with the distance of each run, are saved with the session, but the app doesn’t show them or use them in the stats.
Notifications: only to let you know, on the iPhone itself, that the battery is running low during a session. They don’t send any data.
The data isn’t used for advertising, marketing or profiling.
Where it’s stored
The session history (summary, runs and route) is stored in the app’s private storage on your iPhone.
Heart rate, calories and the Health segments from the watch are stored separately, also on your iPhone, in a store excluded from all backups.
While you record, the app also keeps a session journal so it can recover the session if the app closes. The journal doesn’t include your heart rate, isn’t included in backups and is deleted once the session is saved.
If you have iPhone backup turned on, to iCloud or to a computer, the history is included in it, but the health data isn’t. If you restore your iPhone from a backup, you get your sessions back, but not their heart rate, calories or Health segments.
Who it’s shared with
The app doesn’t share your data with third parties: it has no servers of its own and includes no analytics, advertising or other companies’ services. Data only leaves your iPhone in these cases:
Health: only if you turn on “Save to Health”. Each session is saved in the Health app as a workout, with the route, the distance of the runs and, if available, heart rate and calories.
Apple Maps: to show maps and find nearby resorts, the app uses Apple Maps. To find resorts, it sends your position to Apple, which handles it according to its own privacy policy.
Share route: a session’s GPX file only leaves your iPhone when you share it yourself, and goes wherever you choose.
How long it’s kept and how to delete it
Sessions are kept until you delete them.
To delete a session, swipe its row in History to the left and tap “Delete”, or open it and, at the end of the summary, tap “Delete Session”. Its route, its runs and the watch data are deleted too and, if it was saved to Health, its workout.
Whatever is already in Health can also be deleted in the Health app.
How to withdraw consent
Location and notifications: tap their row in the app’s Settings, or go to iOS Settings. Motion: in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security.
Health: turn off “Save to Health” in the app’s Settings, or change the permissions in the Health app › Profile › Privacy › Apps › SnowTracker and, on the watch, in Settings › Health › Apps.
The app works without these permissions, though without the data that depends on them.
